mark   dig   sand
Mark • It is a good idea to map out your project before you start to dig. This can be done by simply using a garden hose or string line and a can a spray paint.   Dig • Dig a shallow trench 6 inches deep by 12 inches wide. Be sure to call your utility companies before you dig so you don’t cut through any wires!   Sand • Add a couple of inches of sand to your trench. This will make the leveling process much easier.

tamp   level   stack
Tamp • To avoid any settling later on, be sure to tamp down the sand before you lay the first course of units.   Level • When burying the first course of units, it is very important to level them from front-to-back and side-to-side.   Stack • Place the next course of units centered over the two units below and continue until your wall is complete. Make sure your wall is not taller than 24 inches.
